Currency

No sales tax in the borough, but everything at the park entrance is priced for a captive summer market. Buy food and fuel in Anchorage or Fairbanks rather than at the canyon strip, and book the park bus and any lodge months ahead — the season is ten weeks long and it sells out.

ATMs & cards

One or two machines at the park entrance and in Healy, both with high fees. Draw cash in Anchorage or Fairbanks. Mobile signal exists near the entrance and disappears entirely inside the park.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety

Grizzly and black bears, moose with calves in spring, and terrain with no trails, no signal and no shelter. The park rules are strict for good reason: keep 300 metres from bears and 25 from moose, carry food in the containers provided, and tell someone your route. Weather changes in minutes, snow falls in any month, and rescue is hours away by helicopter if it can fly at all.

Getting treated

The care is excellent and the bill is the risk. There is no universal system, an ambulance ride alone can run into four figures, and an uninsured hospital stay can be genuinely ruinous. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is essential — this is the one destination where skipping it can cost more than the trip by an order of magnitude.

Food tip

There is no food in the park worth planning around — pack lunches from Anchorage or the Healy grocery. The canyon strip outside the entrance has a handful of decent places for a season that lasts from June to mid-September, and everything closes the moment it ends.

Getting around

• Park buses — private cars may drive only the first 15 miles; beyond that it is the shuttle or nothing, and that is by design
• The road is closed at Mile 43 — the Pretty Rocks landslide took it out in 2021 and buses turn at the East Fork bridge; the full road is expected to reopen in 2027
• Alaska Railroad — the Denali Star from Anchorage or Fairbanks stops at the park, and is the best way to arrive
• Walking — there are few marked trails on purpose; beyond the entrance area you navigate on open tundra
• Flightseeing — a small plane round the mountain, and the only way most people see the summit at all

Things to do

• Take the bus as far up the road as it goes and watch for bears, caribou and wolves
• Walk the Savage River loop, which anyone can do
• Fly around the mountain if the weather is clear and the budget allows
• Visit the sled dog kennels, the only working ones in a US national park
• Hike off-trail on the tundra with a ranger-led group
• Sit still for an hour: the wildlife comes to those who are not moving

Constitutionally separated from the state, and enormously varied by region — the south is far more observant than the coasts.

Do's and don'ts

Do

• Tip 18-20% at restaurants and bars — servers are paid below minimum wage and depend on it
• Expect sales tax to be added at the till, not shown on the shelf price
• Make small talk with strangers; friendliness is genuine and not a prelude to anything
• Carry ID if you look under about 35 and intend to drink

Don't

• Do not skip the tip to make a point — take it up with the manager instead
• Do not discuss politics, guns or healthcare with strangers unless invited
• Do not stand too close; personal space is larger than in Europe or Latin America
• Do not joke about security at airports or borders
