Private hospitals in Asunción are good and are used to treating foreigners; the public system is stretched and the interior has very little. Anything serious means Asunción or a flight to Buenos Aires or São Paulo.
Dengue is endemic and flares badly in the summer months. Chikungunya and zika are present. Do not drink the tap water outside the capital, and take the heat seriously — 38°C with high humidity is the January norm.
