Keep the usual city sense elsewhere and do not display phones or jewellery; no dar papaya is the local phrase for it. The one specific risk worth naming is drugging and robbery arranged through dating apps, which has killed foreigners: do not go to a stranger’s apartment, and do not leave a drink unattended.

The local saying is "no dar papaya": give nobody the opportunity
The walled city and Getsemaní are patrolled and comfortable by day and evening. Beyond them, and after dark, take a car rather than walk. Persistent street selling is the daily reality, not a danger — a firm no gracias works. Do not buy drugs, and treat anyone who offers them as a setup.

The old centre and the beaches are fine by day and busy in the evening, and the city is far calmer than its reputation from twenty years ago. Phone snatching is the real risk — do not walk with it in your hand — and Taganga after dark is best reached by taxi. Take a guide for the Sierra Nevada rather than walking into the hills alone.

Better than its reputation and still a city where the area matters a great deal. Chapinero, Usaquén and Zona G are comfortable; La Candelaria is fine by day and not after dark; the south and west are not for wandering. Use apps rather than street taxis. No dar papaya — keep phones out of sight. Scopolamine robberies through dating apps are a real and documented risk.
