Ohrid Very safe

Very calm; the town is full of families and walked late. The hazards are the steep, polished stone lanes of the old town in rain, the sun on the water, and, in high summer, the crowds on the lakefront and the traffic on the Struga road. Swim at the beaches, not off the rocks below Kaneo where boats come in.

Comfortable: Ohrid Old Town · Kaneo · the lakefront promenade

  • the old town lanes in rain — the stone is steep and polished smooth
  • the rocks below Kaneo — boats come in close to the shore there; swim at a beach
  • the Struga road in high summer — heavy traffic and narrow verges for anyone walking or cycling

Skopje Safe

Comfortable, and the centre and the bazaar are walked late. The real health risk is the air: in winter Skopje has some of the worst smog in Europe on still days, which matters if you have asthma. Otherwise it is the driving, stray dogs at the edges of town and on Vodno, and the usual care with a phone on a terrace table.

Comfortable: Macedonia Square · Old Bazaar · Debar Maalo · City Park

  • Winter smog on still days, some of the worst in Europe — check the air-quality reading and stay indoors if you have asthma
  • Vodno — stray dogs on the forest paths; walk in company and stay on the main trail
  • the boulevards on foot — drivers do not always stop at crossings
