Zimbabwe travel tips

Zimbabwe travel health

Required is not recommended: the first is what the border asks about, the second is what a clinic would suggest. Both, for Zimbabwe, then the number to dial and what care costs a visitor. Applies to every guide in Zimbabwe: Victoria Falls.

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a country where yellow fever is present

Recommended

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date
  • Malaria prophylaxis — the Zambezi valley is a malaria area
  • Rabies for longer stays
  • Cholera for extended rural stays

Emergency number

994 for an ambulance, 995 for police — but private services respond far faster

Care for visitors

Evacuation likely

Limited. Victoria Falls has a clinic and a small private hospital that handle everyday problems and diving or rafting injuries; anything serious means an air evacuation to Harare or Johannesburg. Insurance with evacuation cover is essential rather than advisable, and medicines are frequently unavailable — bring what you need.

Malaria is a real risk in the Zambezi valley and prophylaxis is strongly advised. Do not drink the tap water. Rafting and bungee operators are largely self-regulated, so check what your insurance actually covers before booking.

The general rules — clinic timing, water, mosquitoes, insurance — are in travel health tips.
