Look for the Multibanco logo — those are the interbank machines and they are free or nearly. Multibanco also pays for parking, trains and utility bills, which is why it is on every corner.
Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Food tip
Very goodCataplana — clams, pork and coriander cooked in a copper clam-shell pot — is the regional dish. Grilled sardines from June to September, and percebes if you are brave. Eat one street back from the marina in Albufeira or Lagos and the price halves.

One strip that does the whole region’s clubbing, and eighty miles of coast that goes to bed at eleven.

Home broadband — Fast. Several people on calls at once, large uploads, 4K. Broadband here runs at 1.9× the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Good. Maps, calls and streaming, and enough to tether a laptop for an afternoon. Mobile runs at 1.2× the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Algarve, so these are medians for all of Portugal. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.

- Expect couvert: the bread and olives brought unasked are chargeable, and you may decline them
- Eat dinner around 20:00, earlier than Spain
- Try the coffee standing at the counter, the way locals take it

- Do not call Portuguese a dialect of Spanish, or speak Spanish expecting it to pass
- Do not be loud in restaurants; the register is quieter than in Spain
- Do not tip more than 5-10%, and only for good service
- Do not confuse fado with background music — audiences listen in silence
