Good valueTenge. Exchange booths (obmen valyuty) are everywhere in the cities, honest, and post the rate in the window; dollars and euros both change well, and clean notes matter. Cards are taken almost everywhere in Almaty and Astana and less so on the road.

Kaspi and Halyk machines are everywhere and free with most foreign cards; decline the conversion. Kaspi’s QR payments run the country and a foreign card cannot join them, so carry some cash for the bazaar and the marshrutka.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

SafeComfortable, and the centre is walked at night. Taxi overcharging off the app is the complaint, and the driving. The mountains are the real thing: Big Almaty Lake is at altitude, the weather turns, and the border zone beyond it needs a permit. Earthquakes happen; the city is built for them.

Getting treated
Good private clinics in Almaty and Astana, used to foreigners and to insurance; adequate state hospitals in the other cities; thin on the steppe and in the mountains, where evacuation is the plan. Cheap by European standards.
Ticks in the foothills above Almaty from April to July carry encephalitis; long trousers on the trails and a check afterwards. Altitude at the lakes and on the Shymbulak lifts. The winter cold in Astana is a medical hazard in its own right. Tap water is chlorinated and most people drink bottled.

Food tip
Very goodThe best eating in Central Asia: beshbarmak (noodles and horse meat) at a family table, plov, shashlik, and a restaurant scene that has arrived. The Green Bazaar for kurt (dried cheese balls), horse sausage and apples; the coffee is serious. A meal out is 5,000 tenge.
Nightlife
A real bar scene for the region: craft beer, cocktail bars and clubs along Dostyk and in the streets above Panfilov Park.

- Do not refuse food twice; once is polite, twice is a refusal
- Do not photograph government buildings, and ask before photographing people at the bazaar
