Getting treated
The care is excellent and the bill is the risk. There is no universal system, an ambulance ride alone can run into four figures, and an uninsured hospital stay can be genuinely ruinous. Comprehensive travel insurance with a high medical limit is essential — this is the one destination where skipping it can cost more than the trip by an order of magnitude.

Very goodBarbecue is the reason: brisket by the pound, eaten off butcher paper, and the queue at the famous places starts before they open. Breakfast tacos are the other institution, and the Tex-Mex is the real thing rather than the export version.

The self-declared live music capital, and it earns it: Sixth Street for the crawl, Red River for the venues, South Congress and Rainey Street for bars with room to talk.
