Very cheapSom. Exchange booths in Bishkek and Osh give a fair rate for dollars and euros with no commission; outside the cities there is nothing, so change in town. Cards work in the capital’s restaurants and hotels and rarely beyond.

Optima, Demir and KICB machines are the ones that take foreign cards without a fee; the others charge or refuse. There are no machines at the lake villages or on the jailoo — take cash for the whole trip from Bishkek.

Getting treated
Basic. Bishkek has a couple of private clinics used to foreigners; beyond it the district hospitals can stabilise and not much more, and the mountains are a helicopter away from anywhere. Evacuation cover is not optional here.
Altitude is the thing that sends visitors home: Song-Köl is at 3,000 m and the Ala-Kul pass at 3,900, and people go up too fast. Shepherds’ dogs bite. Stomach upsets from kumis and unboiled milk. The sun at altitude burns through cloud.

Food tip
Very goodLaghman (hand-pulled noodles), manti, plov and shashlik in the chaikhanas, and horse meat and kumis for the brave. Osh Bazaar for dried fruit, nuts and the bread. A full meal is 400 som; the cafés on Chuy avenue are where the city drinks its coffee.
Nightlife
A young capital: craft beer, cocktail bars and clubs along Chuy and Toktogul, cheap and late.

Home broadband — Fair. Video calls and streaming for one or two people — fine for a holiday, thin for a household working. Broadband here runs at 65% of the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Fair. Maps, calls and streaming; tethering a laptop works for an hour, not a day. Mobile runs at 50% of the global median of 109 Mbps.

Cyrillic script, close to Kazakh. Russian is the second official language and works everywhere; in the villages and the south Kyrgyz is what people speak, and a few words open doors and yurts.

Around 90% Muslim, observance stronger in the south around Osh than in Bishkek, and the mountains keep the shamanic ideas about springs and trees alongside it. Alcohol is sold openly; dress a little more carefully in the south.

- Take your shoes off in a yurt and sit where you are shown — the far side from the door is the guest’s
- Accept kumis when it is poured and drink a little, even if it is not for you
- Break bread with your hands and put the pieces face up

- Do not step on the threshold of a yurt, or lean on its walls
- Do not point your feet at people when sitting on the floor
- Do not photograph the border zones or anything military
- Do not wear shorts in the south, where it is read as underwear
