Things to do

A week easily
  • Take the guided tour of Cape Coast Castle, which is how you see the dungeons and the Door of No Return, and allow two hours
  • See Elmina Castle on another half day — it was built by the Portuguese in 1482, before the slave trade made it what it became, and seeing both in one day is a lot
  • Be at Kakum when it opens, before the groups and the heat — the walkway is seven bridges forty metres up, and the forest is quietest early
  • Walk through Elmina’s harbour in the morning when the painted canoes land the catch
  • Go to Assin Manso, an hour north, where the captured were washed in the river before the march to the coast
  • Visit in August for Emancipation Day and PANAFEST, or the first week of September for the Fetu Afahye festival, and book ahead if you do

Currency budget Ghana

Mid-range
Local currencyGhanaian Cedi (GHS)
Exchange rate1 EUR = 13.3 GHS1 USD = 11.5 GHS

Change in Accra before you come: the forex bureaux in Osu beat anything in Cape Coast, and the cedi moves enough that it is worth changing in small amounts. The castles and Kakum charge foreign visitors a higher rate than Ghanaians, in cedis. MTN MoMo is accepted almost everywhere, including the taxis.

ATMs & cards

Bank machines in Cape Coast town — Ecobank, GCB, Stanbic, Absa — work with foreign cards but have low limits and run short at weekends. Elmina has fewer, Kakum none. Draw in town and carry enough for the castles, the canopy walk and the taxis back.

Avoid these

  • counting on a machine at Elmina or Kakum
  • drawing on a Friday evening, when town machines run short

Use these instead

  • Ecobank
  • GCB
  • Stanbic
  • Absa — in Cape Coast town

Change money in Accra before you come, and keep MTN MoMo loaded for taxis and small payments.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Ghana

Reasonably safe

The sea is the real risk: the UK FCDO says swimming along Ghana’s southern coast is dangerous because of rip tides and undertows, and people drown every year. Do not go to the beach alone, and swim only where locals do and a lifeguard is watching. At the castles, young men may befriend you, ask your name and come back with a "gift" or a letter asking for money for a school — it is a long-running routine and a polite no ends it. The FCDO advises against road travel outside the main towns after dark, which rules out the evening drive back to Accra.

What to book

Most beds are either in Cape Coast town, walkable to the castle and the restaurants, or in beach resorts strung along the coast towards Elmina and beyond. The resorts are quieter and need a taxi for everything, which is fine by day and worth arranging in advance for the evening.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (7 areas)

Comfortable, including after dark

Worth more attention

  • The sea along this whole coast, where the UK FCDO warns against swimming because of rip tides and undertows — swim only with a lifeguard
  • Beaches alone, which the UK FCDO advises against, and any beach after dark
  • Cape Coast Castle — young men who befriend visitors and come back with a letter asking for school money
  • The road to Accra after dark, which the UK FCDO advises against outside the main towns

Entry & visa Ghana visa rules

e-Visa requiredup to 30 daysfrom $60

This changed on 25 May 2026: Ghana ended visa-on-arrival and now requires an e-Visa obtained online before travel. Processing is quoted at 96 hours, the visa is valid 90 days from issue and allows a stay of 30. A yellow fever certificate is mandatory and is checked at the airport.

Other passports

No visa needed

ECOWAS nationals enter free with a valid passport.

Visa required in advance

Applied for at a Ghanaian mission before travel.

How to get it: Apply at evisa.immigration.gov.gh, not through the agencies that still advertise visa-on-arrival — it no longer exists. You need a passport valid six months, a photo, travel dates and proof of accommodation.

Official government source · checked 2026-08-26

Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.

Health & emergencies all of Ghana

Good but costly
Emergency number112, or 193 for an ambulance

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate — required of all arrivals over nine months old, and checked at the airport
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Routine vaccinations up to date
  • Hepatitis A and typhoid
  • Malaria prophylaxis, year-round
  • Rabies for longer stays

Getting treated

Private hospitals in Accra — Nyaho, the Trust — are good by regional standards and take payment up front. Outside the capital, care is basic and evacuation is the realistic plan. Insurance covering repatriation matters more than the treatment cover.

Yellow fever vaccination is genuinely mandatory here and travellers are turned back without the certificate. Malaria is present everywhere all year. The coastal undertow at Labadi and along the Gulf of Guinea is severe and drowns swimmers every year.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Good

Fante kenkey — fermented maize, steamed in leaves — with fried fish and shito, the black pepper sauce, is the coast’s dish and is sold everywhere. Grilled fish from the boats at Elmina, banku and okro stew, and fresh coconut at the roadside. The restaurants on the waterfront at Cape Coast are for the view; the chop bars in town are for the food.

  • Tro-tro — the shared minibuses run along the coast road between Cape Coast and Elmina all day for a few cedis
  • Taxi — shared taxis on fixed routes in town, or chartered for the day to Kakum and back; agree the price first
  • Bus — VIP and STC coaches from Accra take three to four hours, most of it getting out of Accra through Kasoa

English is the official language and is spoken everywhere, so this is about the local layer on top of it: Twi greetings, and the Ghanaian English that will be spoken back to you. "You are invited" said over a plate of food means join us, and refusing outright is rude — take a token mouthful.

Religion

Christian, with a large Muslim minority

Roughly 70% Christian and 20% Muslim, with traditional beliefs woven through both — a Pentecostal church and a shrine can operate on the same street without anyone finding it odd. Religion is public here: shops are named after scripture, Sunday services run for hours and are worth attending if you are invited, and the north is predominantly Muslim while the south is not.

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Shake hands with everyone in the room, and learn the Ghanaian finger-snap handshake if it is offered
  • Use your right hand for everything — eating, giving money, waving
  • Say akwaaba back when you are welcomed, which will be constantly
  • Ask before photographing people, especially at the slave castles, which are memorials rather than attractions
  • Dress up rather than down: Ghanaians dress well and casual scruffiness reads as disrespect

Don't

  • Do not use your left hand to hand over anything, including money
  • Do not point with a finger or beckon palm-up; use the whole hand, palm down
  • Do not treat Cape Coast and Elmina as sightseeing — they are the sites of an atrocity and people visit them to grieve
  • Do not discuss Ghana-Nigeria jollof unless you are prepared for a long argument
  • Do not assume a quoted price is fixed at a market, or that it is negotiable in a shop
