Things to do

Weeks of it
  • Stay five days at least, or a week with the Vale do Pati — the bus alone is a day each way
  • Come in the dry season for the trails and the light shafts in Poço Encantado and Poço Azul, which only reach the water in the middle of the year; the waterfalls run fullest just after the rains
  • Watch the sunset from Morro do Pai Inácio, a short climb from the road
  • Walk up to the top of the Cachoeira da Fumaça from the Vale do Capão and lie flat at the edge to look down
  • Trek the Vale do Pati over three or four days with a local guide, sleeping in the valley's family houses
  • Swim the Ribeirão do Meio, the natural rock slide an hour's walk from town

Bring most of your cash from Salvador. Pousadas and agencies in Lençóis take cards, but independent guides, the drivers and the small places in the Vale do Pati are often cash, and the machines in town are few. Pix needs a Brazilian account, so it is not an option for most visitors.

ATMs & cards

Lençóis has a handful of machines, which run out at weekends and in holiday weeks, and not all of them take foreign cards — Bradesco is the one most likely to. Draw what you need at Salvador airport or in the city before the bus, decline conversion, and treat the machines in town as a reserve.

Avoid these

  • relying on the machines in Lençóis at a weekend or in a holiday week

Use these instead

  • Bradesco
  • Banco do Brasil

Few machines, which run dry, and not all take foreign cards. Draw at Salvador airport before the bus, and keep cash for guides.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Brazil

Safe

Lençóis is calm and walkable at night. The risks are the landscape: rivers rise fast when it rains upstream, even under a clear sky where you are, and canyons are where you do not want to be when they do. Go with a guide for anything beyond the walks from town, carry more water than seems necessary, and do not lean out over the edge of the Fumaça for the photograph.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (6 areas)

Comfortable, including after dark

Worth more attention

  • Rivers and canyons when it is raining upstream — flash floods arrive with little warning, under a clear sky
  • Cachoeira da Fumaça — the edge of the drop, which has no rail; lie down to look, do not stand
  • Vale do Pati — unmarked trails over several days — go with a guide
  • Night walking on trails, and heat on the long exposed climbs

Health & emergencies all of Brazil

Good but costly
Emergency number192 for an ambulance, 190 for police

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate, but only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Yellow fever — recommended for most of Brazil including the area around Rio
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date

Getting treated

Public emergency care (SUS) is free to everyone including foreigners, but is crowded and slow. Private hospitals in Rio and São Paulo are excellent and expect insurance or payment up front.

Dengue, zika and chikungunya are all present and mosquito-borne — repellent matters. Yellow fever vaccination should be given at least 10 days before arrival.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Good

The interior of Bahia eats differently from the coast: godó, a stew of green banana and sun-dried beef, beans with everything, and beiju from cassava. Lençóis has more good restaurants than a town its size should, most of them in the old streets off the square. Carry lunch on any trail day — the long walks have nothing on them.

Getting around

Ride-hailing

  • BoltNot here

99 the Brazilian one, often cheaper

CheapR$12–30 across town
Against a taxi
Cheaper than a taxi and, in the big cities, the default for everybody.

Some favela and periphery addresses will not be accepted by drivers at night; that is a driver safety decision, not a fare one.

  • Bus — Salvador to Lençóis is about seven hours, with a few departures a day; book ahead at weekends and holidays
  • Tour — the caves, the pools and the viewpoints are spread across 150 km of the park, and day trips by car with a guide from Lençóis are how most people reach them
  • On foot — the Ribeirão do Meio, the Serrano and the town are walks from the square; the Vale do Pati is days on foot with a guide
  • Car — useful for the Vale do Capão and the caves; the main roads are paved and the last kilometres usually are not
  • Airport: Salvador is the usual way in; Lençóis has a small airport with a few Azul flights a week

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Greet with a kiss on each cheek between women, or a woman and a man; a handshake between men
  • Expect physical closeness in conversation — standing back reads as cold
  • Arrive late to social invitations; on time is genuinely early
  • Learn a few words of Portuguese, and never open in Spanish

Don't

  • Do not make the OK sign with finger and thumb — it is obscene here
  • Do not walk with a phone visible in the street
  • Do not wear obvious jewellery or watches on the beach or in the city
  • Do not call Brazilians Hispanic or assume they speak Spanish
