Things to do

Several days
  • Walk or cycle Mlilwane’s trails among zebra, wildebeest and warthog, which you can do because there are no big predators
  • Drive to Hlane for the day for rhino, elephant and lion, which are seen from a vehicle
  • Watch the dancing at Mantenga cultural village, then walk to the falls behind it
  • Time a visit for Umhlanga, the reed dance at the end of the southern winter, if you can — dates are announced late
  • Hike in Malolotja in the highveld, where the trails are long and nearly empty
  • Pay in rand if you have them, and spend your last emalangeni before you cross back to South Africa

Currency budget Eswatini

Mid-range
Local currencySwazi Lilangeni (SZL)
Exchange rate1 EUR = 18.8 SZL1 USD = 16.7 SZL

The lilangeni is pegged one to one to the South African rand, and rand are accepted everywhere in Eswatini at par, so there is no need to change money if you arrive from South Africa. It does not work the other way: emalangeni are not taken in South Africa, so spend them or swap them for rand before you leave. Cards work at the lodges, the malls and the fuel stations; the craft markets and the parks’ smaller gates want cash.

Travel tips

ATMs & cards

Standard Bank, FNB and Nedbank have machines in Mbabane, Manzini and the Ezulwini valley malls. They pay out emalangeni; if you are going on to South Africa, ask a bank or a shop for your change in rand.

Avoid these

  • carrying emalangeni into South Africa, where they are not accepted

Use these instead

  • Standard Bank
  • FNB
  • Nedbank — in Mbabane, Manzini and the Ezulwini malls

Rand are accepted at par everywhere, so South African cash needs no changing.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Eswatini

Reasonably safe

The UK FCDO does not advise against travel to any part of Eswatini. It does say to avoid walking in downtown Mbabane and Manzini after dark, that theft and occasional muggings happen at the edges of towns and at night, and that crime rises before Christmas. Political protests happen and have been policed with force; keep away from them. Rural roads at night are the bigger risk — cattle, goats and unlit vehicles — so drive in daylight. Malaria is a low, seasonal risk in the eastern lowveld around Hlane and Mkhaya and not a concern in the Ezulwini valley.

What to book

The Ezulwini valley has most of the lodges and is central for everything; Mlilwane’s rest camp puts you inside the sanctuary with zebra outside the hut. Book in the valley rather than in Mbabane or Manzini town.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (8 areas)

Comfortable, including after dark

Worth more attention

  • Mbabane town centre — on foot after dark, which the UK advice says to avoid
  • Manzini town centre — on foot after dark, which the UK advice says to avoid
  • Political demonstrations, which have been policed with force — keep well away
  • Rural roads after dark, with cattle on the road and unlit trailers on the verge
  • Hlane Royal National Park — stay in the vehicle in the lion enclosure, and on the marked routes

Entry & visa Eswatini visa rules

No visa neededup to 30 days

Thirty days without a visa. Passports must be valid three months from arrival with two blank pages — and two more if you are coming through South Africa, which most people are. Check the date on the entry stamp before you leave the desk.

Other passports

Visa required in advance

Eswatini’s Ministry of Home Affairs sets the list; confirm with an Eswatini mission before travel.

How to get it: Nothing to apply for on an exempt passport. Most visitors drive in from South Africa, so the South African entry and exit stamps use pages too — count them before you go.

Official government source · checked 2026-10-03

Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.

Health & emergencies all of Eswatini

Limited
Emergency number977 for an ambulance, 999 for police

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate, but only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Hepatitis A and typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date
  • Malaria prophylaxis for the eastern lowveld from November to May — Mbabane and the Ezulwini valley are malaria-free
  • Rabies for longer or rural stays

Getting treated

Basic, with shortages of common medicines. Mbabane and Manzini have private clinics; anything serious is a drive to Mbombela or a flight to Johannesburg across the South African border. Bring what you take, and evacuation cover.

Malaria is confined to the east — Lubombo and the eastern halves of the other three regions, where Hlane and Mlawula are — and mostly from November to May. Eswatini has the highest HIV prevalence in the world. Cattle and goats on unlit roads make night driving the thing to avoid.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Good

Braai — grilled meat over a wood fire — is how most of the country eats out, with pap and chakalaka, as in South Africa next door. Sishwala, a thick maize porridge, is the local staple. The Ezulwini valley has the restaurants; Malkerns, just south, has the farm stalls and the craft workshops.

Getting around

Ride-hailing
  • UberNot here
  • BoltNot here

No ride-hailing. Hotels book taxis, and kombis run between the towns.

  • Hire car — the way to see the country, picked up at the airport or driven in from Johannesburg; the main roads are good, and the rural ones carry cattle
  • Minibus — the kombis run between Mbabane, Ezulwini and Manzini all day and are cheap; they thin out by evening
  • Taxi — private cars from the ranks in Mbabane and Manzini, or called by your lodge; agree the fare first
  • On foot or by bike — inside Mlilwane, among the zebra and antelope, which is the rare thing here
  • Airport: King Mswati III (SHO), 1h 15m to the Ezulwini valley

Say a few words

siSwati

  • How much?Malini?ma-LEE-nee
  • Goodbye (to someone staying)Sala kahleSA-la GA-hleh

siSwati and English are both official, and every Swazi speaks the first; it is close to Zulu, so a Zulu greeting is understood. Greetings are formal and come before anything else. Sawubona is to one person, sanibonani to several, and the answer to unjani is yebo, ngikhona — yes, I am here.

Travel tips

Religion

Christian, with Swazi tradition at the centre of national life

Most people are Christian, many in Zionist and other African independent churches, and the monarchy’s ceremonies sit beside the church rather than beneath it. Incwala, the kingship ceremony around the December solstice, is sacred and photography is restricted on some of its days; Umhlanga, the reed dance in late August or September, is public and visitors may watch.

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Greet with sawubona and wait for the reply; Swazi courtesy is formal and greetings come first
  • Give and receive with both hands, or with the right hand and the left touching the forearm
  • Follow the photography rules at Incwala and Umhlanga exactly, and ask a guide which days are restricted
  • Dress modestly in villages and at royal ceremonies
  • Buy crafts directly from the makers at the markets and cooperatives; it is where the money reaches people

Don't

  • Do not criticise the king or the royal family in public; it is an absolute monarchy and the subject is sensitive
  • Do not photograph royal residences, police, soldiers or government buildings
  • Do not drive after dark, when cattle and goats are on unlit roads
  • Do not show public affection; same-sex relationships are criminalised
  • Do not swim in rivers and dams, where bilharzia is present
