Reasonably safeThe route itself is one of the easier parts of South Africa and the towns along it are comfortable by day. The standard precautions are not optional: do not drive at night on the N2 outside towns, do not stop for anyone flagging you down, keep bags out of sight in the car, and use ATMs inside buildings. Hiking trails are safe; the Indian Ocean has strong rips and few lifeguards outside the main beaches.

Private hospitals (Netcare, Mediclinic) are genuinely world-class and cost far less than Europe or the US, which is why medical tourism exists here. The public system is overloaded. Insurance is worth it, and private ambulances (ER24, Netcare 911) respond faster than the state service.
Tap water is safe in Cape Town. No malaria in the Western Cape.

Food tip
Very goodKnysna oysters, snoek smoked over open wood, and biltong for the drive. Braai is a social form rather than a meal. The wine at the western end — Hermanus and the Hemel-en-Aarde valley — is Pinot Noir country and largely unknown outside South Africa.
Getting around
