Things to do
A week easily- Walk to Pedra Furada along the beach at low tide, and come back over the hill if the tide has turned
- Spend a day at Lagoa do Paraíso in a hammock in the water
- Learn to kite at Preá, with a school that puts you on a radio
- Watch the sunset from the beach, where the capoeira circle forms
- Take a buggy to Tatajuba, crossing the river by raft
- Pay the tourism fee (TTS) online before you arrive — R$41.50 a person in 2026, covering ten days
Jericoacoara travel tipsthe general rules
Currency budget Brazil
Mid-rangeMost pousadas, restaurants and tour desks take cards, and Pix runs the rest — but Pix needs a Brazilian account and the signal in the vila is unreliable. Bring the cash you expect to need from Fortaleza or the airport, in small notes, for the caipirinha carts, the buggy drivers and the tips.
ATMs & cards
There is no bank and no cash machine in the vila. The nearest is in Jijoca, the town on the main road, and it is often out of service. A shop near the entrance to the vila will give cash against a card for a fee. Bring enough cash in, and pay by card wherever you can.
Avoid these
- arriving without cash — there is no machine in the vila
- the machine in Jijoca as your only plan, since it is often out of service
Use these instead
- Banco do Brasil
- Bradesco
- Itaú
- Santander
Withdraw in Fortaleza or at the airport before you set off. A shop at the vila entrance gives cash against a card for a fee.
Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.
Safety all of Brazil
SafeThe vila is safe and easy, and the risks are outdoors: the sun, quad bikes and buggies on the dunes, the tide on the walk to Pedra Furada, and the wind and current if you are learning to kite. Keep a phone and a card on you, not your passport, and use a buggy with a licensed driver.
Where to walk, and where to pay attention (6 areas)
Comfortable, including after dark
- Vila de Jericoacoara — including at night
- Praia de Jericoacoara — the beach in front of the vila, by day and at sunset
Worth more attention
- Pedra Furada — the beach route floods on a rising tide — go out on the falling tide
- Quad bikes on the dunes, which overturn, and buggies whose drivers have no licence
- Kitesurfing without a school in the strong wind of the second half of the year
- The dunes on foot at night, where it is easy to lose the vila's lights

Entry & visa Brazil visa rules
No visa neededup to 90 days
Other passports
e-Visa requiredup to 90 days$80
Brazil reintroduced visas for these three nationalities. It is an e-visa applied for online.
Visa required in advance
Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.
Health & emergencies all of Brazil
Good but costlyRequired to enter
- Yellow fever certificate, but only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor
Worth having
- Yellow fever — recommended for most of Brazil including the area around Rio
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid
- Tetanus up to date
Getting treated
Public emergency care (SUS) is free to everyone including foreigners, but is crowded and slow. Private hospitals in Rio and São Paulo are excellent and expect insurance or payment up front.
Dengue, zika and chikungunya are all present and mosquito-borne — repellent matters. Yellow fever vaccination should be given at least 10 days before arrival.
Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.
Food tip
Very goodFish and shrimp, tapioca, and more choice than a fishing village had any right to — Jeri has been a destination for travellers since the 1980s, and the kitchens show it. The evening institution is the caipirinha from a cart on the beach road. Everything arrives by 4x4 over the sand, and prices reflect it.
Travel tipsNightlife
Caipirinha carts on the beach road from sunset, restaurants that fill late, and forró a few nights a week — a whole village of people who have nowhere to drive to.
- Rua Principal — the main sand street, its restaurants and bars
- The caipirinha carts along the beach road, which is where the evening starts
Closing: Bars around midnight to 02:00; forró nights go on later.
Getting around
Limited- BoltNot here
Ordinary vehicles are kept out of the village. The transfer from Jijoca or the airport is by 4x4, and inside it you walk or hire a buggy with a driver.
