Safety all of India
SafeOne of the safest and most literate states in India, and comfortable for solo travellers by Indian standards. The practical issues are on the water: houseboat quality varies enormously and the cheapest have no life jackets, the canals are still and mosquito-heavy after dusk, and the water is not for swimming. Kerala is malarial only in patches but dengue is present statewide.

Getting treated
Private hospitals in the big cities are genuinely excellent and inexpensive, which is why medical tourism is a major industry. Standards drop sharply outside them, and Agra in particular is thin — serious cases go to Delhi, two hours away. Payment up front is expected.
Never drink tap water or take ice outside good hotels. Traveller’s diarrhoea affects a large share of visitors — give street food a few days. Any animal bite or scratch, including from monkeys at the monuments, means a clinic the same day.

Very goodCoconut in everything: karimeen pollichathu, a lake fish grilled in a banana leaf, appam with stew, and the sadya vegetarian feast eaten with the right hand off a banana leaf. Toddy from the palm is fermented by the afternoon and drunk at toddy shops.
