Things to do

Several days
  • Pick your shore before you book: the south is sandy, shallow and warm for families, the north is hills, vineyards and reeds
  • Learn the storm lights on the first day — the faster flashing means out of the water and off it
  • Swim in Hévíz on a cool day, when the steam lifts off the water
  • Go up the Badacsony and drink on a terrace on the way down, by train rather than car
  • Cycle a stretch of the lake path rather than the whole circuit
  • Come in the high season for the water, or out of it for the quiet — not expecting both

Currency budget Hungary

Mid-range
Local currencyHungarian Forint (HUF)
Exchange rate1 EUR = 364 HUF1 USD = 318 HUF

Forint. Beach entry, lángos stalls and the smaller wine terraces still prefer cash in summer, so carry some; everything else takes cards. A euro price on a menu is a convenience and a worse rate.

Travel tips

ATMs & cards

OTP, K&H and Erste machines in Keszthely’s centre. The standalone machines by the beaches in summer are the expensive kind; decline any conversion offer.

Avoid these

  • Euronet
  • the seasonal machines along the beaches

Use these instead

  • OTP Bank
  • K&H
  • Erste

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Hungary

Very safe

Very calm, with one rule people break every summer: watch the storm warning lights on the shore. Balaton is shallow, which means it goes from flat to steep waves very fast. And Hungary’s drink-driving limit is zero, which matters on a wine coast.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (8 areas)

Worth more attention

  • The storm warning lights on the shore — the slower flashing is a warning, the faster one means a storm is coming and nobody should be on the water
  • Pedalos and paddleboards far out on a still afternoon — a squall arrives faster than they can be paddled back
  • Siófok — the south-shore party town, loud late into the night on high-summer weekends
  • Driving between wine terraces — the limit in Hungary is zero

Crime is low. The lake itself is the hazard, and only when the wind gets up..

Entry & visa Hungary visa rules

No visa needed

Freedom of movement — no time limit, and no visa. Bring a passport or national ID card.

Other passports

No visa neededup to 90 days

90 days within any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area, not per country. ETIAS, a paid online authorisation, is being introduced for these passports — check the official link for whether it applies to your travel dates.

Visa required in advance€90 (Schengen short-stay visa)

A Schengen short-stay visa is applied for before travel, at the consulate of your main destination.

How to get it: Apply at the consulate or visa centre of the country you will spend most time in, typically 15 working days ahead and no more than six months before travel.

Official government source · checked 2026-08-09

Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.

Health & emergencies all of Hungary

Good and affordable
Emergency number112

Required to enter

No vaccinations are required for entry from Europe or North America.

Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Routine vaccinations up to date
  • Tick-borne encephalitis for forest and countryside walking

Getting treated

EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Good

Fogas, the Balaton pike-perch, is the dish to order; fried keszeg and lángos with sour cream and cheese are what the beaches live on. The north shore pours Olaszrizling from Badacsony and Csopak, on terraces above the water.

Uber does not operate in Hungary — it was legislated out in 2016 and has not come back.

  • Train — Budapest-Déli to Keszthely along the south shore, about two and a half hours
  • Bus — to Hévíz and its thermal lake, a short ride from Keszthely
  • Ferry — the Szántód–Tihany car ferry crosses the narrows; passenger boats link the resorts in summer only
  • Bicycle — a cycle route goes the whole way round the lake, about two hundred kilometres
  • Airport: Budapest (BUD), then the train from Déli

Religion

Catholic, with a Calvinist minority

Religion is culturally present rather than practised widely. Basilicas ask for covered shoulders.

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Say jó napot on entering shops
  • Toast with wine or spirits and make eye contact
  • Bring a small gift if invited to someone’s home
  • Try the thermal baths — they are an everyday institution, not a tourist novelty

Don't

  • Do not clink beer glasses — the convention dates to 1849 and older Hungarians still hold it
  • Do not put your hands under the table while eating
  • Do not assume Hungarian relates to any neighbouring language; it does not
  • Do not discuss the Trianon treaty lightly
