Things to do

Several days
  • Snorkel off Thumbi West Island, where the cichlids come to your mask and most of them are found nowhere else on earth
  • Swim from a boat rather than the village beach, and book the bilharzia test for six weeks after you get home
  • Kayak out to Mumbo Island and stay the night, if the island camp is open
  • Change money at a bank in Lilongwe or Blantyre and never with the dealers who will offer a better rate
  • Travel the road by day only, and fill up wherever there is fuel
  • Go north to Nkhata Bay or Likoma only with a week to spare — the lake is nearly 600km long and the roads are slow

Currency budget Malawi

Good value
Local currencyMalawian Kwacha (MWK)
Exchange rate1 EUR = 1,965 MWK1 USD = 1,745 MWK (the official rate — check before you travel)

The kwacha has been devalued sharply more than once in recent years, and the rate on the street has often run well ahead of the bank rate. Changing with street dealers is illegal and the commonest scam on the lake; use a bank or a licensed bureau in Lilongwe or Blantyre. Lodges at the lake quote in dollars or kwacha and the larger ones take cards; the boatmen, the village restaurants and the snorkel hire want kwacha in cash. Bring plenty of small notes, because change runs out.

ATMs & cards

There is no reliable machine at Cape Maclear. Draw kwacha in Lilongwe, Blantyre or Mangochi on the way — Standard Bank and National Bank are the ones that take foreign cards. Machines can run dry and limits per withdrawal are low, so draw early and more than once.

Avoid these

  • looking for a machine at Cape Maclear
  • street money changers, who are illegal and the commonest scam on the lake

Use these instead

  • Standard Bank
  • National Bank — in Lilongwe, Blantyre or Mangochi

Withdrawal limits are low and machines run dry; draw early and more than once. Bring small notes — change is scarce at the lake.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Malawi

Reasonably safe

Bilharzia is the risk people get wrong: the lake carries it, the shallow weedy water near villages and reed beds most of all, and Cape Maclear has a long record of it. Swim from a boat or off the islands rather than the village shore, towel off quickly, and have a test about six weeks after you come home — the treatment is simple and the disease is not. The UK FCDO says to avoid travelling after dark on Malawi’s roads, warns of frequent fuel shortages, and notes occasional demonstrations; it does not advise against travel to any part of the country. Theft from beaches and rooms happens at Cape Maclear — lock things away and do not leave a bag on the sand. Malaria is present all year at the lake.

What to book

Cape Maclear is a line of lodges along one beach inside the national park, from backpacker huts to quiet chalets; pick one with a lockable room and its own boat. Monkey Bay has the fuel and the shops but not the beach.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (7 areas)

Comfortable, including after dark

Worth more attention

  • Swimming or wading in shallow, weedy water near villages and reed beds, where bilharzia is carried
  • Bags and phones left on the beach or in an unlocked room, which is the theft that happens here
  • Street money changers, who offer a better rate and pay in folded, short or fake notes
  • Roads after dark, which the UK FCDO says to avoid — unlit, and shared with people, bicycles and animals
  • Boats without life jackets, and the afternoon wind, which builds waves on the open lake

Entry & visa Malawi visa rules

Visa on arrival$50 single entry on arrival, cash; $75 if applied for online

Malawi currently sorts passports into two lists. These are on its Category Two list, which can get a visa on arrival at every designated port of entry, and airlines are told to board them without one. The UK government quotes $50 cash for a single entry on arrival; the online portal charges $75 by card.

Other passports

e-Visa required

Passports on Malawi’s Category One list must get the visa before departure. Check which list yours is on at evisa.gov.mw.

How to get it: Either pay at the airport in clean US dollars, or apply at evisa.gov.mw beforehand, which costs more and saves the queue. The visa is valid for three months and a single entry.

Official government source · checked 2026-10-03

Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.

Health & emergencies all of Malawi

Evacuation likely
Emergency number998 for an ambulance, 997 for police — both unreliable, so get the local numbers from your lodge

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate, but only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Hepatitis A and typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date
  • Malaria prophylaxis — the risk is high throughout, the lakeshore included
  • Polio booster for some travellers — vaccine-derived polio has been detected
  • Rabies for longer or rural stays
  • Cholera for some itineraries

Getting treated

Basic. Lilongwe and Blantyre have private clinics; rural facilities are minimal, ambulances are scarce, and medicines run short. Serious cases are flown to Johannesburg or Nairobi. Carry your own first-aid kit and the full course of anything you take.

Lake Malawi carries bilharzia, and the risk is highest near reeds and villages — a test a few weeks after you get home is a sensible habit if you swam. Malaria is high everywhere. Malawi had the largest cholera outbreak in its history in 2022 and 2023, and cases rise in the rains. Mulanje reaches 3,000m.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Decent

Chambo — the lake’s tilapia, grilled or fried whole — with nsima, the stiff maize porridge, is the meal, and it is caught in front of you. Usipa, small dried fish, is the cheap version. The lodges do the rest.

Getting around

Car needed
Ride-hailing
  • UberNot here
  • BoltNot here

No ride-hailing. Minibuses run the main roads, and lodges arrange transfers from Lilongwe or Blantyre.

  • Hire car with driver — the usual way from Lilongwe or Blantyre, four hours or more, which is the reason to drive in daylight
  • Minibus — the shared minibuses run Lilongwe to Monkey Bay, then a pickup or a lodge transfer to Cape Maclear; cheap, slow and crowded
  • Boat — the lodges and local boatmen take you to the islands off Cape Maclear for snorkelling; agree the price and ask for life jackets
  • Kayak — the islands are close enough to paddle to, and some lodges run overnight trips
  • Ferry — the Ilala runs up the lake to Likoma and Nkhata Bay when it is in service; check it is running before you build a trip around it
  • Airport: Lilongwe (LLW), 4h by road

The national language of Malawi, where it is called Chichewa, and the lingua franca of Lusaka and Zambia’s Eastern Province, where it is called Nyanja. Around Livingstone and in the north of Zambia, Tonga, Lozi and Bemba are the home languages and English is the safe common ground. Zikomo carries most of the weight: thank you, please and excuse me in one word.

Travel tips

Religion

Christian, with a large Muslim minority

About three quarters Christian and around one in seven Muslim, the Muslims concentrated in the south and along the lake, where the Yao towns around Mangochi and Cape Maclear have mosques and keep Ramadan. Relations are easy. The Chewa Gule Wamkulu, the masked dance of the Nyau society, is a ritual rather than a performance, and photographing it needs permission.

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Say moni to everyone and ask after them — muli bwanji — before getting to the point
  • Use zikomo freely: it is thank you, and also please and excuse me
  • Give and receive with the right hand, or with both
  • Cover knees in villages, women especially; a chitenje wrap over shorts is what local women do too
  • Accept a plate of nsima if offered, eaten with the right hand

Don't

  • Do not photograph people, police or government buildings without asking
  • Do not treat a Gule Wamkulu dance as a show to film; ask first, and accept a no
  • Do not hand money or sweets to children who ask; give through a school or a project instead
  • Do not show public affection; same-sex relationships are criminalised
  • Do not buy chamba, however casually it is offered — recreational cannabis is illegal and the beach sellers are not the only ones watching
