Things to do

A week easily
  • See the falls from both sides if you can: Zambia has Devil’s Pool and the Boiling Pot, Zimbabwe has the long front-on view
  • Book Devil’s Pool through the Livingstone Island operator, which runs roughly from the late dry season to the start of the rains, when the water is low enough
  • Know that in the late dry season much of the Zambian face runs dry to bare rock — that is when Devil’s Pool opens and when the view is best from Zimbabwe
  • Walk down the Boiling Pot path to the river below the falls, which is steep and closes at the highest water
  • Ask for the KAZA univisa at the airport or the border if you plan to cross to Zimbabwe — $50 for 30 days across both countries and day trips into Botswana
  • Walk with the white rhino in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, guided by its armed scouts
  • Take a sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi, upstream of the falls, and count the hippos

Currency budget Zambia

Expensive
Local currencyZambian Kwacha (ZMW)
Exchange rate1 EUR = 22.2 ZMW1 USD = 19.7 ZMW

Activities — the gorge, Devil’s Pool, the flights over the falls — are quoted in dollars and most operators take cards; the town, the taxis and the market run on kwacha. Unlike Victoria Falls town on the other bank, Livingstone has its own working currency and machines that dispense it, so you do not need to arrive with a stack of dollars. You do need dollars in cash if you are crossing to Zimbabwe.

ATMs & cards

Zanaco, Stanbic, Absa and FNB all have machines along Mosi-oa-Tunya Road in the town centre. They give kwacha, not dollars, so bring dollars from home for Zimbabwe and for the KAZA visa.

Avoid these

  • counting on a machine for US dollars, which you need for Zimbabwe

Use these instead

  • Zanaco
  • Stanbic
  • Absa
  • FNB — on Mosi-oa-Tunya Road

Kwacha for the town, dollars in cash for Zimbabwe and the visa. Activity operators take cards.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Zambia

Safe

The UK FCDO says Zambia’s towns and main parks are generally safe by day and advises against walking at night; in Livingstone the second matters for a reason of its own, because elephants and hippos use the riverfront road after dark. Take a taxi between the town and the lodges. The FCDO also says adventure sports around the falls carry real risk — Devil’s Pool, the gorge swing and the bungee are run by established operators, and the river is not somewhere to improvise. Malaria is present, most of all in the rains. The UK advice against travel in Zambia covers nowhere near Livingstone.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (8 areas)

Comfortable, including after dark

Worth more attention

  • Walking the road between the town and the riverfront lodges after dark, where elephants and hippos cross
  • Devil’s Pool — only with the operator, only at low water, and never on your own
  • Baboons at the falls entrance, which will open a bag with food in it
  • Touts and money changers at the bridge and the border post
  • Boiling Pot — the path is steep and slippery, and closed at high water for a reason

Entry & visa Zambia visa rules

No visa neededup to 90 days

Zambia widened its visa waiver to 167 countries and territories from 1 January 2025. Stays are up to 90 days in any twelve months for tourism. Arriving by air you need a return ticket; by land, enough money for the stay. The $50 KAZA UNIVISA, which also covers Zimbabwe and day trips into Botswana, is still worth buying if you will cross at Victoria Falls more than once.

Other passports

e-Visa required

Applied for through the Zambia Department of Immigration before travel.

How to get it: Nothing to apply for on an exempt passport. Bring a passport valid six months with two blank pages, and the return ticket, which is checked.

Official government source · checked 2026-10-03

Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.

Health & emergencies all of Zambia

Limited
Emergency number991 for police, 992 for an ambulance, 993 for fire

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a country where yellow fever is present — including a transit of more than twelve hours in one
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Hepatitis A and typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date
  • Malaria prophylaxis — the risk is high everywhere, Livingstone and the Luangwa included
  • Rabies for longer or rural stays
  • Cholera for some itineraries

Getting treated

Well below European standards, and basic in the countryside. Lusaka and Livingstone have private clinics that stabilise and refer. Anything serious means a flight to Johannesburg, and a safari camp’s answer to an emergency is an airstrip, so check the evacuation cover matches it.

Malaria everywhere and all year, worst in the rains from November to April. Bilharzia is in lakes and slow rivers, and the Zambezi has hippos and crocodiles, which is the better reason to stay out of it. Cholera returns in the rainy season; drink bottled or treated water.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Good

Nshima — stiff white maize porridge — with relish, chicken or bream is what the town eats, and the restaurants on Mosi-oa-Tunya Road serve it at a fraction of lodge prices. The riverfront lodges do the long lunches and the sundowners. Zambian bream from the Zambezi is the fish to order.

Travel tips

Nightlife

A modest evening: a sunset cruise or a sundowner on a lodge deck, then dinner and a bar or two in a small town that goes to bed early.

Closing: Early — most places are quiet by eleven.

Where to book for it

To walk home: The town centre, where the restaurants are a walk or a short taxi apart and the guesthouses are cheaper than the river.

To sleep: The riverfront lodges upstream, ten to twenty minutes out on the Zambezi, with hippos instead of traffic at night.

Take a taxi back to the riverfront lodges — the road is unlit and the elephants use it.

Ride-hailing
  • UberNot here
  • BoltNot here

Nothing to hail in Livingstone or South Luangwa. Yango runs in Lusaka only. Lodges collect from the airport, and taxis are booked through the hotel.

  • Taxi — blue-and-white town taxis on Mosi-oa-Tunya Road; there are no meters, so agree the fare before you get in, and have the lodge call one at night
  • Lodge shuttle — most riverfront lodges run a free or cheap shuttle to the falls and into town
  • On foot — the town centre by day; the falls are 10km away, which is a taxi
  • Bridge — walk out onto the Victoria Falls Bridge from the Zambian border post with a bridge pass, no visa needed, or carry on into Zimbabwe with one
  • Airport: Livingstone (LVI), 15 min to the town centre

Around Livingstone and in the north of Zambia, Tonga, Lozi and Bemba are the home languages and English is the safe common ground. Zikomo carries most of the weight: thank you, please and excuse me in one word.

Religion

Christian, and declared so in the constitution

Zambia was declared a Christian nation in 1991 and the declaration sits in the preamble of its constitution, though the state protects other faiths. Most people are Protestant or Catholic, and church is central to the week. Traditional ceremonies carry real weight alongside it — the Kuomboka of the Lozi, when the king moves off the flooded Barotse plain, and the Ngoni N’cwala in February — and visitors are welcome at both.

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Greet properly before asking anything, and in a village expect a soft clap of the hands as part of it — clapping back is polite
  • Give and receive with the right hand, the left touching the right forearm, or with both hands
  • Dress modestly away from the lodges; a chitenge wrap over shorts goes a long way in a village
  • Ask before photographing anyone, and accept a no
  • Tip guides, trackers and camp staff in cash at the end of a stay

Don't

  • Do not photograph police, soldiers, airports, State House or other government buildings
  • Do not swim in the Zambezi or in lakes unless a guide says it is safe — hippos, crocodiles and bilharzia
  • Do not walk around a bush camp after dark without an escort
  • Do not show public affection; same-sex relationships are criminalised and the law applies to visitors
  • Do not hand money or sweets to children; lodges run community projects that are the better route
