Things to do
A week easily- Sleep in Aït Ben Haddou rather than Ouarzazate, so you have the ksar at dawn before the coaches from Marrakech arrive
- Climb to the granary at the top of the ksar at sunset
- Go round Kasbah Taourirt, the Glaoui stronghold in the middle of Ouarzazate
- Tour the film studios if you care which epic was shot where; skip them if you do not
- Spend a day in Skoura among the palm grove kasbahs, which almost nobody stops for
- Drive the old caravan route up the Ounila valley to Telouet, slowly
Ouarzazate travel tipsthe general rules
Currency budget Morocco
Good valueThe dirham cannot be bought abroad. Change in Marrakech or at a bank in Ouarzazate itself; Aït Ben Haddou has guesthouses and souvenir shops but no bank, and the families who charge a few dirhams to cross their houses inside the ksar want cash.
ATMs & cards
The banks are on Avenue Mohammed V in Ouarzazate: Attijariwafa, BMCE and Banque Populaire. Machines charge foreign cards a flat fee per withdrawal. Draw enough here before Aït Ben Haddou, Skoura or the Draa valley.
Avoid these
- relying on finding a machine in Aït Ben Haddou or Skoura
Use these instead
- Attijariwafa Bank
- BMCE
- Banque Populaire
The guesthouses, the guides and the families inside the ksar are paid in cash. Draw in Ouarzazate before going out to the kasbahs.
Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.
Safety all of Morocco
SafeQuiet and easy. Guides at the ksar entrance in Aït Ben Haddou are persistent and mostly harmless, and the families living inside charge a small fee to pass through their houses, which is legitimate. The real hazards are the heat in high summer and the Tizi n'Tichka road, which is slow, crowded with lorries and occasionally closed by snow in winter — do not drive it in the dark. Stay one night if you are crossing to the desert; two if you sleep in Aït Ben Haddou itself, which is the point of staying at all.
Where to walk, and where to pay attention (7 areas)
Comfortable, including after dark
- Avenue Mohammed V
- Kasbah Taourirt
- Aït Ben Haddou — the new village and the guesthouses across the riverbed
Worth more attention
- Tizi n'Tichka — the pass from Marrakech is slow and full of lorries, and snow closes it some winter days; drive it in daylight
- The summer heat — near forty degrees by day; see the ksar early and late, and not in the middle of the day
- Guides at the Aït Ben Haddou entrance who set a price only once the walk is over — agree it first, or walk up alone
- Dry riverbeds after a storm in the mountains, which can flood within minutes

Entry & visa Morocco visa rules
No visa neededup to 90 days
Other passports
e-Visa required~€50
Morocco operates an e-visa for a growing list of nationalities.
Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.
Health & emergencies all of Morocco
Good but costlyRequired to enter
- Yellow fever certificate, but only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor
Worth having
- Hepatitis A
- Typhoid
- Tetanus up to date
- Rabies for longer stays — stray dogs and cats are everywhere
Getting treated
Private clinics in Marrakesh and Casablanca are reasonable and inexpensive, and expect cash or an insurance guarantee up front. Public hospitals are basic. Pharmacies are excellent, widespread and can dispense a lot without a prescription.
Do not drink the tap water. Stomach upsets are the most common complaint by a distance.
Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.
Food tip
GoodKasbah food: tagine, Berber omelette, and bread baked in the guesthouse oven. Madfouna, the stuffed flatbread of the south, is worth asking for. Ouarzazate has a few honest grill restaurants around Place al-Mouahidine; Aït Ben Haddou eats at its guesthouses, which is where the better food is anyway.

- Against a taxi
- The petits taxis are metered by law and frequently are not in practice. Insist on the meter or agree the fare first.
Uber left Morocco in 2018. In the tourist cities the apps barely operate and the petit taxi is the system.

Travel tipsReligion
Sunni Muslim
Islam is the state religion and the king holds religious authority. Non-Muslims may not enter most mosques — the Hassan II in Casablanca is the main exception. Ramadan changes opening hours everywhere.
Travel tipsDo's and don'ts
Do
- Haggle in the souks — the first price is an opening, and good humour is part of it
- Dress modestly, particularly women and particularly away from tourist areas
- Use the right hand for eating and giving
- Accept mint tea; it is the standard gesture of welcome
Don't
- Do not follow unofficial guides who offer to show you the way in the medina; the help ends in a demand
- Do not photograph people, market stalls or performers without asking — payment will be expected
- Do not enter mosques unless you are Muslim; almost all are closed to visitors
- Do not show public affection, and avoid discussing the monarchy critically
Where to stay in Ouarzazate
No Holistay rentals in Ouarzazate yet — the platform is just opening up. Every listing here will have a video tour and the option to negotiate the nightly price directly with the host.
In the meantime, here is Ouarzazate on the sites that do have the inventory — each search is already filled in:
- Booking.com hotels, guesthouses and apartments — the widest coverage almost everywhere
- Airbnb whole homes and apartments, and the better option for a week or more
