Mid-rangePesos. The resorts quote dollars and give a poor rate for them, so pay in pesos wherever the choice is offered and ignore the “we accept USD” signs. Change at a casa de cambio in town rather than at the airport, where the spread is worst.

Reasonably safeComfortable in the tourist strip and walked late, and honest about the rest: the cartel violence that makes the news is between groups and not aimed at visitors, but it is why the state keeps a police presence on the beach. The daily risks are pickpockets on the Quinta, drink prices that change between the menu and the bill, and the sea when the red flag is up.

Getting treated
Private hospitals in Mexico City, Cancún and the resort areas are good and cost a fraction of US prices; public ones are variable. Resort clinics are notorious for aggressive billing, so call your insurer before agreeing to treatment where you can.
Do not drink the tap water. Dengue is present on both coasts. Altitude in Mexico City (2,240m) affects some people for the first day or two.

Food tip
Very goodTacos al pastor from a trompo on Calle 30 rather than on the Quinta, where the same taco costs three times as much; cochinita pibil from a market stall in the morning, because it sells out; and ceviche from the fish places behind the ADO station.
Nightlife
The loudest stretch on this coast: clubs along the Quinta and at Mamitas that run until dawn, and quieter mezcal bars a few streets back.

Home broadband — Good. Comfortable for two people working, streaming in the evening, large downloads. Broadband here runs at about the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Fair. Maps, calls and streaming; tethering a laptop works for an hour, not a day. Mobile runs at 43% of the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Playa del Carmen, so these are medians for all of Mexico. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.
