SafeSafe, with the caveats of any mountain place. Paths are slippery and steep, especially in the wet season from June to August, and a fall on a terrace edge is a long one. The town has a persistent problem with children selling handicrafts during school hours — buying from them keeps them out of school. Nights are genuinely cold from November to February and rooms are often unheated.

Getting treated
International hospitals and clinics in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are good, English-speaking and inexpensive compared with Europe. Public hospitals are cheap, crowded and rarely English-speaking. On Phu Quoc the facilities are basic and serious cases go to the mainland.
Dengue is common in the rainy season. Malaria is not a risk in the cities or the usual tourist areas. Traffic injuries are by far the most common reason visitors need a hospital.

Food tip
GoodMountain food: thang co, grilled pork belly on bamboo skewers, and salmon and sturgeon farmed in the cold streams, which is not what anyone expects in Vietnam. Corn wine at the homestays is strong and offered constantly.
