Mid-rangeEuro, and nearly nobody uses cash: cards and phones pay for everything down to a market stall. Change money only if you arrive with it; the booths in the old town charge for the privilege.

Estonia is as close to cashless as a country gets; a card and a phone do everything. Withdraw a little for the odd market stall and nothing more.
Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Getting treated
EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment. Excellent, digital and quick; the private clinics in Tallinn and Tartu speak English and the state system works.
Ticks in the forest and the long grass from spring to autumn, and the encephalitis they carry is worth the vaccine if the trip is the bogs and the islands. The sea is cold. Ice on the pavements from late autumn to spring is what actually fills the emergency rooms.

Food tip
Very goodBlack bread, smoked fish, elk, and a new Nordic scene that has arrived in the Telliskivi and Rotermann quarters; the old town has the medieval theme restaurants and the tourist prices. Kohuke, the curd snack, from any shop. A dinner is €25–35.

Craft beer and cocktail bars in the old town and Telliskivi, clubs that go late, and the sauna as the other evening.

Home broadband — Fair. Video calls and streaming for one or two people — fine for a holiday, thin for a household working. Broadband here runs at 73% of the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Good. Maps, calls and streaming, and enough to tether a laptop for an afternoon. Mobile runs at 1.3× the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Tallinn, so these are medians for all of Estonia. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.
A median is the middle of every connection tested there, old copper and new fibre together — so in a country part-way through laying fibre it sits well below what a fibre line actually delivers, and a rental on one can run several times this number. Most Estonians declare no religion at all; the Lutheran churches are architecture and the Orthodox ones serve the Russian-speaking third of the country. Nothing is expected of a visitor beyond quiet inside.
