Things to do

A week easily
  • Get lost in the old town in the morning and find a rooftop for sunset
  • Stay in a converted courtyard house rather than a hotel
  • Walk up to the Towers of Silence late in the afternoon
  • Visit the fire temple, where the flame has been tended for centuries
  • Do Chak Chak, Kharanaq and Meybod as one day out

Currency budget Iran

Very cheap
Local currencyIranian Rial (IRR)
Exchange rate1 EUR ≈ 2,900,000 IRR on the open market1 USD ≈ 2,580,000 IRR on the open market (early October 2026; moves weekly)

Bring cash for the whole trip, in euros or US dollars, in clean recent notes. Foreign Visa and Mastercard do not work anywhere in Iran because of sanctions — not in shops, not in hotels, not in ATMs — and nothing can be paid online from abroad. Change money in stages at a licensed exchange office (sarraf), which pays the open-market rate; the official bank rate is far worse, and the street is not the place. The thing that confuses everyone: prices are written in rials but almost always spoken, and often written, in toman, and one toman is ten rials. A price that sounds a tenth of what you expected is in toman, so ask. The rate moves weekly, sometimes faster, so change a few hundred at a time rather than everything on day one.

ATMs & cards

No ATM in the country will take a foreign card. Budget the trip in cash before you fly, bring more than you expect to need, and keep it in two places. Some visitors use a prepaid tourist card such as Mah Card, loaded with cash in Iran and used in the card machines every shop has; the unspent balance is paid back at the end of the trip. It saves carrying bricks of rials, not the need to bring the money in.

Avoid these

  • every ATM, for a foreign card — none will work

Use these instead

  • licensed exchange offices (sarraf), with euros or dollars brought in
  • a prepaid tourist card such as Mah Card, loaded with cash

Foreign Visa and Mastercard do not work anywhere in Iran. Budget the whole trip in cash before you fly, and change it in stages — the rate moves weekly.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of Iran

Reasonably safe

Street crime is low, the old town is calm to walk after dark, and Iranians are famously hospitable to visitors. The real issues are of another kind: several Western governments advise against travel to Iran, and dual nationals and some foreign nationals have been detained. Check your own government's current advice before booking; travel insurance usually follows it. Never photograph government or military sites, the police, or a protest. Women must cover their hair in public by law and dress modestly; men do not wear shorts. In summer the heat is the main hazard: carry water, and see the old town early and late.

Where to walk, and where to pay attention (6 areas)

Worth more attention

  • A camera near government or military buildings — photographing one is treated as a serious matter rather than a mistake
  • Any demonstration or gathering — not a place for a foreign visitor to be, or to film
  • The summer heat — over 40°C in high summer; the lanes are shaded, the Towers of Silence and the desert trips are not

Entry & visa Iran visa rules

Visa required in advance

Not eligible for a visa on arrival. A visa has to be arranged in advance through a licensed Iranian tour operator, and you must travel with a licensed guide for the whole trip. Separately, the UK advises against all travel to Iran and the US tells its citizens to leave — read the notice at the top of this page.

Other passports

Visa required in advance

Israeli passports are not admitted, and an Israeli stamp or other evidence of travel to Israel in any passport can mean refusal at the border.

No visa neededup to 90 days

A bilateral arrangement; check the official page for the conditions.

No visa neededup to 21 days

No visa neededup to 15 days

Arriving by air only, once in six months, and not extendable. This waiver has changed since it began in 2024 — Indian passports were taken off it in November 2025 — so check the official page before relying on it.

e-Visa required

Not eligible for a visa on arrival; apply for the e-visa in advance.

Visa on arrival

Most other passports, Indian included, can apply for an e-visa in advance or take a visa on arrival at the main international airports. Proof of travel insurance valid in Iran is asked for; most foreign policies are not, and an Iranian one can be bought at the airport.

How to get it: Apply on the foreign ministry’s e-visa portal, which issues a reference number to collect the visa at the airport or a consulate. Women must wear a headscarf in the visa photo and from the moment they land. Your passport should not carry an Israeli stamp.

Official government source · checked 2026-10-02

Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.

Health & emergencies all of Iran

Good but costly
Emergency number115 for an ambulance, 110 for police, 125 for fire

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate, only if you arrive from a country where it is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date

Getting treated

Good in the cities, with private hospitals in Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan that see foreign patients. You pay in cash and up front: foreign cards do not work, and most foreign insurers will not pay an Iranian hospital directly.

Desert heat in summer — Yazd and Kerman pass forty degrees — and Tehran’s air in winter, when the smog settles. The traffic is the risk most visitors underestimate, as a pedestrian as much as a passenger.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Good

Cake Yazdi, small cardamom-and-rosewater muffins, and the city's sweet shops in general — Yazd is known across Iran for them. Eat in a courtyard-house hotel, several of which serve dinner to non-guests, and try shooli, a sour vegetable soup that is the local winter dish.

Against a taxi
Cheaper than a street taxi, and the price is set before you get in, which ends the haggling.

Both register only with an Iranian phone number, so buy a local SIM first, and pay in cash or with the tourist card — foreign cards cannot be added.

  • On foot — the old town is a maze of mud-walled lanes and the only way to see it; download an offline map
  • Snapp — the local ride-hailing app, for the Towers of Silence and the bus terminal; it needs an Iranian phone number
  • Car and driver — for Chak Chak, Kharanaq and Meybod in a day, arranged by any guesthouse
  • Train — to Tehran and to Kerman
  • Airport: Yazd (AZD), about 20 minutes from the old town

Religion

Shia Islam, the official religion of an Islamic republic, and it shapes public life

Religious law sets the rules on dress and alcohol and the shape of the calendar. Armenian and Assyrian Christians, Zoroastrians and Jews are long-established minorities — Yazd’s fire temple and towers of silence are Zoroastrian. During Muharram, and above all on Ashura, there are processions; in Ramadan, eating or drinking in public in daylight is not allowed.

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Women: cover your hair in public, and wear loose clothing over the arms and legs — it is the law, not a courtesy
  • Expect taarof: an offer is often refused before it is accepted, and a driver or shopkeeper waving away payment usually means ask again
  • Take your shoes off in a home and at a shrine, where women are also lent a chador at the door
  • Accept the tea — it comes everywhere, and refusing every cup reads as cold

Don't

  • Do not photograph government buildings, police, military sites or anything that looks like a protest
  • Do not bring alcohol in or drink it; it is illegal
  • Do not offer a hand to someone of the opposite sex unless they offer theirs first
  • Do not talk politics with people you have just met, or loudly in public
