Ljubljana Very safe

One of the safest capitals in Europe, and the centre is walked at any hour. The complaint is bike theft and the odd drunk on the river terraces at closing. Metelkova is safe and looks as if it should not be.

Lake Bled Very safe

Very safe; the risk is the crowd in August and the road round the lake with cyclists on it. The viewpoint paths are steep and rooty and the Vintgar boardwalks close after heavy rain. Swim only from the lidos — the lake is deep and cold off the rocks.

Piran Very safe

Very safe and very small. The seafront rocks are the swimming, and they are sharp — water shoes. Parking in the town is impossible and the wardens are efficient; use the garage. That is the list.

Lake Bohinj Very safe

Very safe on the valley floor. The mountain is where care goes: Vogel and the paths above are real alpine terrain, weather turns fast, and Triglav has fixed cables and a death or two most summers — a guide for anyone not experienced. The lake is cold all year.
