Safety all of Slovenia
Very safeOne of the safest capitals in Europe, and the centre is walked at any hour. The complaint is bike theft and the odd drunk on the river terraces at closing. Metelkova is safe and looks as if it should not be.

Getting treated
EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment.
Tap water is excellent everywhere, including the mountain huts. The tick-borne encephalitis vaccine is the one genuinely worth having here; locals are vaccinated as children. Mountain rescue is professional and, for the uninsured, expensive.

Food tip
Very goodFriday from spring to autumn is Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna) on the market square — every restaurant in town cooking outside. The rest of the week, the river terraces for coffee, the market for burek and fruit, and a gostilna out of the centre for a proper Slovenian lunch with štruklji.

- Ljubljana taxis are honest by the meter and expensive by the airport rank; the apps arrived in 2024 and undercut both. Outside the capital, book a taxi by phone — the apps thin out fast.

Home broadband — Fast. Several people on calls at once, large uploads, 4K. Broadband here runs at 1.6× the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Good. Maps, calls and streaming, and enough to tether a laptop for an afternoon. Mobile runs at 1.3× the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Ljubljana, so these are medians for all of Slovenia. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.

Roman Catholic, in a secular country
Catholic by tradition and quiet about it; churches are visited as churches, with the usual covered shoulders, and the island church at Bled is as much a wedding venue as a place of worship. Nothing about the calendar or the dress affects a visitor.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Greet with dober dan on entering a shop or a mountain hut, and say it to walkers on the path
- Keep right on the mountain paths and give way going uphill
- Sort your rubbish; the bins are labelled and it is taken seriously
- Try the wine — nobody outside the country has heard of it and it is very good
Don't
- Do not call it Slovakia, or the other way round; it happens daily and it wears
- Do not swim in the lakes off the rocks at Bled; the lidos exist for a reason
- Do not leave a hut without paying and without signing the book
- Do not pick the flowers in the national park, which is what the sign says and means
