The hazards are the terrain and the weather: fog closes in on the ridges fast, the higher trails hold snow into April, and mobile coverage in the deeper valleys is patchy enough to matter if you are walking alone. Winter tyres are a legal requirement, not a suggestion, and the passes close.

OutstandingBlack Forest gateau at its source is nothing like the frozen version — kirsch is the point and it should be obvious. Schwarzwälder Schinken is air-dried ham, Maultaschen are Swabian pasta parcels, and the region has an improbable number of Michelin stars for a place with this many cows.
Getting around
LimitedFreiburg has Uber and Bolt; the valleys have neither. The KONUS guest card, which comes free with the room, makes every local bus and train free, and it is the reason not to hire a car.
