Very safeSafe and friendly. The sea is what hurts people here: Atlantic rip currents are strong and several beaches have no lifeguard outside July and August — swim between the red and yellow flags or not at all. The coast path runs along unfenced cliff edges. The lanes are single-track with high hedges and summer traffic, and most visitor accidents are on them.

Very goodA Cornish pasty has a crimp on the side, not the top, and the ones from a bakery in a back street beat the ones on the harbour. Fish landed at Newlyn, crab sandwiches anywhere, and a cream tea — jam first, then cream, and saying otherwise starts an argument with Devon.

The Anglican church is established by law with the monarch at its head, while actual attendance is low. Cathedrals often charge entry but are free during services.
