Draw in Te Anau or Queenstown. The lodges and the cruise desks take cards, and between them there is nothing for two hours.

Very safeThe hazards here are weather and water. The road to Milford closes for avalanche risk in winter and for slips at any time, sandflies are relentless and repellent is not optional, and the tracks need the gear the signs describe rather than the gear people bring.

Excellent, and unusually generous to visitors: the ACC scheme covers everyone in the country, tourists included, for treatment of accidental injury regardless of fault or nationality. Illness is not covered, so insurance is still worth having.
The weather in the mountains is the hazard. There are no snakes and nothing venomous worth worrying about.

GoodTe Anau and Milford have a handful of places and that is all there is. Take food for the drive; between the last shop and the fiord there is nothing at all.
