The sulphur smell is harmless. The sun here burns faster than visitors expect — New Zealand sits under a thin ozone layer and an hour is enough in summer.

Excellent, and unusually generous to visitors: the ACC scheme covers everyone in the country, tourists included, for treatment of accidental injury regardless of fault or nationality. Illness is not covered, so insurance is still worth having.
The weather in the mountains is the hazard. There are no snakes and nothing venomous worth worrying about.

Food tip
GoodHāngī is the thing to eat here: meat and vegetables cooked in a pit with heated stones, and it tastes of earth and steam in a way nothing else does. Try it at a village that cooks it for its own people rather than at a hotel buffet. Trout from the lake cannot be sold in restaurants by law — catch one and they will cook it for you.
