SafeComfortable and family-oriented. Mount Athos is a self-governing monastic state: men need a permit issued in advance and women may not land at all, which is law rather than custom — the boat cruise is how everybody else sees it. The coast roads are winding and the August traffic is heavy.

Very goodFish and the Macedonian kitchen from up the road: mussels from the gulf, grilled sardines, and the Sithonia tavernas that are worth driving to. Kassandra is the busier peninsula and priced for it.

Ookla publishes no separate figure for Halkidiki, so these are medians for all of Greece. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.

- Do not rush a meal or ask for the bill early; the table is yours for the evening
