ExpensiveEuro, and cards are taken everywhere on the mountain — lift passes, huts, ski hire. Cash is still worth having for the smallest mountain restaurants, the village bakery and the car park machines. Never change money at the resort exchange desks, whose rate is built for people who have just landed.

Use a bank’s own machine in the valley town rather than the ones in the resort centre, which are usually independent and charge for the privilege. Always decline the conversion. Draw before going up: several villages have one machine and it empties over a holiday weekend.

SafeComfortable. The resort is high and snow-sure, which is its advantage, and the off-piste is avalanche terrain, which is the standard caveat here and a real one. The après is very heavy and the village road at night is the place where that shows.

Getting treated

Mountain rescue is superb and is charged for; check your insurance covers it before hiking or skiing.

Food tip
GoodTyrolean and priced for a resort with a captive audience. The Idalp restaurants are enormous and functional; the huts on the Swiss side at Alp Trida are better and the view is better with them. Galtür, twenty minutes up the valley, is where an ordinary dinner costs an ordinary amount.
Nightlife
One of the three loudest resorts in the Alps, with an après scene that starts on the mountain at three and does not stop until the clubs shut.
