SafeQuiet and easy, with the town itself walkable after dark. Erawan’s upper tiers are slippery limestone and people are injured on them every season — shoes with grip matter more than they sound. The river looks calm and has a current; swim where others are swimming. Dengue is present in the wet season.

Getting treated
One of the best places in the world to have an accident. Private hospitals in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai are excellent, fast, English-speaking and cheap by Western standards — a consultation runs a few tens of euros. They expect payment or an insurance guarantee up front.
Dengue is present year-round and worse in the rainy season; there is no prophylaxis, so repellent is the defence. Rabies is present in street dogs and monkeys — any bite or scratch means a clinic the same day.

Very goodRiver fish is the local speciality — pla chon grilled in salt crust, and hoy khraeng cockles. The floating restaurants are aimed at coaches; the good ones are the shophouses on Ban Nuea road, where the town eats.
