Good valueEuro. Cards are taken almost everywhere now, including the beach bars, but the smallest tavernas and the bakeries still prefer cash and the island bus wants coins. Change nothing at the port booths, whose rate is the worst on the island.

Use a bank’s own machine — Piraeus, Alpha, Eurobank, National Bank — rather than the Euronet ones in the tourist streets, which charge a fee and push a bad conversion. Always decline the conversion. On a small island the machine can empty at a weekend in August; draw early.

SafeComfortable and used to visitors. The bar street in Kos town is loud and young in August and has the usual problems of one. Cycling is the pleasure here but the coast road has fast traffic. The island is a landing point for migration and the reception centre is nothing a visitor encounters.

EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment. Island clinics handle basics; anything serious means a transfer to Athens or Crete, which is quick but not instant.

Food tip
Very goodKrasotyri cheese, kept in wine; pitaridia, a pasta soup; and the tavernas in Zia and Pyli rather than the harbour strip. The Turkish influence on this coast is on every menu.

Home broadband — Fair. Video calls and streaming for one or two people — fine for a holiday, thin for a household working. Broadband here runs at 70% of the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Good. Maps, calls and streaming, and enough to tether a laptop for an afternoon. Mobile runs at 1.2× the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Kos, so these are medians for all of Greece. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.
