A week easily- Walk up the terraces barefoot from the south gate rather than driving to the top
- Swim in Cleopatra’s pool among the fallen columns
- Stay for sunset, when the coaches leave and the white turns orange
- Walk the necropolis, which almost nobody does

The hazards are physical and specific: the terraces must be walked barefoot and the travertine is slippery and sharp in places, the white surface reflects sun brutally and people burn badly in an hour, and the site has almost no shade. Carry water. The antique pool is a separate ticket and its floor is uneven ancient masonry.

Private hospitals in Istanbul are genuinely excellent and a fraction of Western European prices, with English spoken in the international departments. State hospitals are free for emergencies but slow and rarely English-speaking. Insurance is strongly advised — you will be asked to pay up front at private hospitals.
Tap water is chlorinated but heavily mineralised; almost everyone drinks bottled.

GoodThis is inland Aegean cooking: tandır lamb cooked in a pit, and şiş köfte. The village restaurants are aimed squarely at coach tours; eat in Denizli instead, where the kebab is better and a third of the price.

Around 99% Muslim by heritage, but the state is constitutionally secular and Istanbul is cosmopolitan. Women cover their heads to enter mosques, everyone removes shoes, and mosques close to visitors during the five prayer times.
