Good valuePesos. The resorts quote dollars and give a poor rate for them, so pay in pesos wherever the choice is offered and ignore the “we accept USD” signs. Change at a casa de cambio in town rather than at the airport, where the spread is worst.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Reasonably safeComfortable, with one serious caveat: Zicatela’s shore break drowns strong swimmers every year and the rip is constant — that beach is for watching unless you surf well. Carrizalillo and Puerto Angelito are the swimming ones. The coast road at night has no lighting and livestock on it.

Getting treated
Private hospitals in Mexico City, Cancún and the resort areas are good and cost a fraction of US prices; public ones are variable. Resort clinics are notorious for aggressive billing, so call your insurer before agreeing to treatment where you can.
Do not drink the tap water. Dengue is present on both coasts. Altitude in Mexico City (2,240m) affects some people for the first day or two.

Food tip
Very goodOaxacan cooking that arrived at the coast: tlayudas at night, pescado a la talla, and the market at Rinconada. The Zicatela strip is priced for visitors; the comedores in the old town are not.

Two scenes that barely meet: the surf bars at La Punta, barefoot and early, and the Adoquín and Zicatela strip, later and louder.

- Accept food when offered; refusing outright can feel like rejection

- Do not make cartel jokes; for many people it is not abstract
- Do not be brusque — a request without a greeting first lands badly
