Things to do
A week easily- Spend a night at a roça rather than in the city, and walk the plantation with someone who works it
- Drive south to see Pico Cão Grande from the road, and go on to the beaches at the bottom of the island
- Walk into Obô Natural Park with a guide to the Lagoa Amélia crater
- Snorkel at Lagoa Azul in the dry season, when the water is clearest
- Watch turtles nesting on the southern beaches with a local conservation guide, in the nesting season
São Tomé travel tipsthe general rules
Currency budget São Tomé and Príncipe
Mid-rangeA cash economy. The dobra is pegged to the euro at 24.5, and euros are taken almost everywhere a visitor spends — hotels, guides, taxis — with change given in dobras. Cards work at a few hotels in the capital and very little else. Bring the trip in euros, in small notes.
ATMs & cards
A small number of machines in the capital, at the banks, and foreign cards are often refused. Treat them as an emergency fallback; there is nothing outside the city.
Avoid these
- relying on a foreign card in the machines
Use these instead
- BISTP
- Ecobank
- Afriland First Bank (all in the capital)
Bring euros in cash for the whole stay. The rate is fixed, so there is nothing to shop around for, and euros are accepted directly in most places that see visitors.
Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.
Safety all of São Tomé and Príncipe
SafeCalm and friendly; the UK advice describes crime as generally low, with burglaries and occasional armed robberies, and no areas it advises against. The practical risks are the roads, which are poor and unlit outside the capital and blocked by landslides after heavy rain, and the sea on the exposed southern and eastern beaches. Malaria is present, and the medical care is basic: serious cases are flown out.
Where to walk, and where to pay attention (9 areas)
Comfortable, including after dark
- São Tomé — the city centre and the seafront avenue
- Lagoa Azul
- Roça Agostinho Neto
- Roça São João dos Angolares
Worth more attention
- The roads after dark, which are unlit and have animals and pedestrians on them
- Landslides on the roads to the south and the interior after heavy rain
- Swimming on the exposed southern and eastern beaches, where the surf is strong
- Burglary at rented houses, which is the crime the UK advice mentions; use the safe and lock up
- Malaria, which is present all year

Entry & visa São Tomé and Príncipe visa rules
No visa neededup to 15 days
Up to 15 days for tourism without a visa. A 20-euro entry fee is paid on arrival, in euros, dollars or dobras. Staying longer needs a visa.
Other passports
e-Visa required
Applied for online through the Migration and Borders Service (SMF), with a passport scan, the return ticket and the hotel booking. The decision takes up to seven working days and the fee is paid at the border.
How to get it: For a visa, apply at smf.st and keep the process number it gives you — that is how the decision is looked up. Immigration can ask for proof of funds of 100 euros a day.
Entry rules change often and depend on your passport, not where you live — the official page above is the authority, and the airline checks before you board.
Health & emergencies all of São Tomé and Príncipe
Evacuation likelyRequired to enter
- Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a country where yellow fever is present — including a transit through one
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor
Worth having
- Hepatitis A and typhoid
- Tetanus up to date
- Malaria prophylaxis — the risk is high on both islands
- Rabies for longer or rural stays
- Yellow fever for some itineraries — ask a travel clinic
Getting treated
Very limited. Hospital Ayres de Menezes in São Tomé city is the main hospital, and many conditions mean evacuation to Portugal, South Africa, Ghana or Gabon. Príncipe has a small hospital and little else. Evacuation cover and a well-stocked personal kit are the plan.
Malaria is present all year. The country reported its first recorded dengue outbreak in 2022, so use repellent by day as well as a net at night. Pharmacies are small, so bring every medicine you need for the whole trip. Many beaches have strong currents and none have lifeguards.
Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.
Food tip
GoodFish, breadfruit, banana and palm oil: calulu, a long-cooked stew of smoked fish and leaves, is the national dish. The roças serve lunch on the veranda, and the chocolate made on the island from its own cocoa is the thing to carry home.

The difference from the UK, Europe, the US and ten more
Worked out against America/New York, which is where this request looks like it came from.
eSIM
Neither of the two big eSIM providers sells a plan for São Tomé and Príncipe, so this is one of the few places where the answer is a local SIM or nothing.

Travel tipsReligion
Catholic, with Protestant and Adventist minorities
Mostly Catholic, a legacy of five centuries of Portuguese rule, with growing evangelical churches. Each town keeps its patron saint’s feast, and the tchiloli — a sixteenth-century Portuguese court drama performed in masks — is the island’s great inherited art form. Nothing here constrains a visitor beyond dressing decently in church.
Travel tipsDo's and don'ts
Do
- Slow down — leve-leve, easy-easy, is the national motto and the pace of everything
- Greet in Portuguese, bom dia or boa tarde, before asking anything
- Bring enough euros in cash for the whole trip; cards are not widely accepted and there are only a handful of cash machines
- Watch nesting turtles only with the local guides who run the night walks, and keep torches off
- Ask before photographing people, and especially the fishermen and market women
Don't
- Do not eat turtle meat or eggs, or buy anything made from shell; sea turtles are protected by law here
- Do not count on a card or a cash machine
- Do not go into the Obô forest or towards Pico Cão Grande without a guide; the paths are unmarked and the forest is dense
- Do not rush people or raise your voice; it gets nothing done here
- Do not drink the tap water
