Very safeThe people are not the risk here; the cold is. At -30°C exposed skin freezes in minutes, and the tour operators lend the suits and boots for that reason — wear them. Do not drive at dusk without watching for reindeer, and tell somebody where you are going on any trail.

Getting treated
Excellent and universal. The EHIC and GHIC are accepted; visitors pay a small patient fee like residents do. In Lapland the nearest hospital is Kiruna, and remote areas rely on helicopter evacuation.
Ticks in the summer, which carry TBE and Lyme in the south and along the coast. In the far north the cold is the whole health question: at -30°C the operators lend the suits for a reason. Mosquitoes in July in Lapland are extraordinary and not a joke.

Food tip
GoodReindeer, cloudberries and Arctic char, and none of it is a novelty item — this is what people here eat. Suovas, lightly smoked reindeer, is the one to look for. In summer the cloudberries are picked wild and cost more than salmon.

An ice bar, a hotel bar and the sky, which is the actual entertainment for four months of the year.

Home broadband — Fast. Several people on calls at once, large uploads, 4K. Broadband here runs at 1.5× the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Good. Maps, calls and streaming, and enough to tether a laptop for an afternoon. Mobile runs at 1.2× the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Swedish Lapland, so these are medians for all of Sweden. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.
A median is the middle of every connection tested there, old copper and new fibre together — so in a country part-way through laying fibre it sits well below what a fibre line actually delivers, and a rental on one can run several times this number. English is near-universal and excellent. The one word worth knowing is fika, which has no translation and is an institution rather than a coffee.
Religion
Lutheran by heritage, and one of the most secular societies on earth
Church membership is a cultural formality for most and attendance is very low. What is observed instead is the calendar — Midsummer, Lucia and Christmas Eve are kept seriously by people who never go to a church.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Take your shoes off in a home, always
- Take fika seriously — a coffee and something sweet with somebody is a social obligation, not a break
- Split the bill exactly, which is normal and expected
- Queue by taking a number, which is how almost every counter in Sweden works
Don't
- Do not boast, and do not single yourself out — lagom, "just enough", runs deeper than it sounds
- Do not sit next to a stranger on a bus if another seat is free
- Do not turn up late; fifteen minutes early is on time
- Do not skip the shoe rule, even at a party
