ExpensiveExchange in Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas, not at the park — there is nowhere to change money inside it. Rates at the Argentine border crossings are poor. Card acceptance is good in town and non-existent on the trails.

Banco Estado and Santander in Puerto Natales are the last reliable machines before the park. They run out of cash in high season, especially at weekends — withdraw more than you think you need, and do it on a weekday.

Puerto Natales is the last cash before the park, and its machines empty at weekends in high season. Draw on a weekday and take more than you think you need.
Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.
Safety all of Chile
Very safeCrime is essentially absent; the weather is the entire risk and it is not a small one. Wind regularly exceeds 100 km/h, four seasons pass in an afternoon, and hypothermia is the real danger even in January. Register at every checkpoint, carry layers you think you will not need, and turn back when told to — CONAF closes trails for good reason.

Getting treated
The best in South America alongside Uruguay. Private clinics in Santiago and Punta Arenas are excellent and expect insurance or payment up front; public hospitals treat emergencies. In Torres del Paine you are hours from either, and CONAF rescue is the only help there is.
Tap water is safe in the cities. In Patagonia the risks are exposure and wind rather than anything infectious — hypothermia happens in January.

Food tip
GoodPuerto Natales eats well for a town this remote — king crab, Patagonian lamb slow-roasted over a fire, and calafate berry everything. Inside the park you carry your own or pay refugio prices.

Ookla publishes no separate figure for Torres del Paine, so these are medians for all of Chile. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.

Do
- Greet with one kiss on the right cheek between women, or a woman and a man; men shake hands
- Say buenos días on entering a shop and gracias on leaving, every time
- Accept the once — the late-afternoon tea and bread — if offered; refusing reads as cold
- In Patagonia, close every gate behind you; the estancias run sheep and the gates matter
Don't
- Do not assume Chilean Spanish will sound like the Spanish you learned — it is fast, clipped and full of local slang
- Do not bring up Pinochet casually; it divides families and is not small talk
- Do not eat anything with your hands at a table, including pizza and chips — Chileans use cutlery for almost everything
- Do not turn up on time to a private dinner invitation; fifteen to thirty minutes late is expected
