Very cheapPesos, and cash matters more inland than on the coast — the markets, the comedores and the village workshops take nothing else, and those are the reasons to come. Casas de cambio in the centre beat the banks and the airport.

Safety all of Mexico
SafeVery comfortable, and the plaza is busy until late. The cenote steps are wet limestone and slick; the Chichén Itzá road has coach traffic from seven in the morning; the heat in spring is the thing that actually spoils days.

Getting treated
Private hospitals in Mexico City, Cancún and the resort areas are good and cost a fraction of US prices; public ones are variable. Resort clinics are notorious for aggressive billing, so call your insurer before agreeing to treatment where you can.
Do not drink the tap water. Dengue is present on both coasts. Altitude in Mexico City (2,240m) affects some people for the first day or two.

Food tip
Very goodYucatecan and better here than on the coast: cochinita pibil, longaniza de Valladolid, papadzules, and lomitos. The Bazar Municipal on the plaza does all of it for nothing; the restaurants on the Calzada do it slowly and with wine.

- Do not make cartel jokes; for many people it is not abstract
- Do not be brusque — a request without a greeting first lands badly
