EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment. Good in Vilnius and Kaunas, with private clinics that speak English; adequate elsewhere; the state system works with an EHIC.
Ticks in the forest and the long grass from spring to autumn, and the encephalitis is common enough here that the vaccine is worth it for the spit and the lakes. Ice on the cobbles in winter. The sea side of the spit has rips.

Food tip
Very goodCepelinai — potato dumplings the size of a fist — cold pink beetroot soup in summer, and a restaurant scene that has arrived along Vilniaus street and in the Halės market; Lithuanian craft beer is serious. A dinner is €20–30.

Bars in the old town and Užupis, craft beer along Vilniaus street, and clubs on the new-town side that go late.

Catholic, and more seriously than its neighbours
The most religious of the Baltic states: the churches are full on Sunday, the Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage, and the Gates of Dawn in Vilnius is a working shrine where people pray on the stairs. Cover shoulders inside and keep quiet.
