SafeComfortable in the villages and serious in the mountains. The Vikos gorge traverse is a full day on rough ground with no signal and no water source you should trust; people are helicoptered out of it most summers. The mountain roads are narrow with drops and ice from autumn to spring.

Very goodEpirot mountain cooking: pites, the pies that are the region’s art form, with greens or cheese or pumpkin; goat; and trout from the Voidomatis. The village guesthouses cook better than the restaurants.

Ookla publishes no separate figure for Zagori, so these are medians for all of Greece. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.

- Do not rush a meal or ask for the bill early; the table is yours for the evening
- Do not photograph inside monasteries without checking, and dress modestly at them
