SafeComfortable. The rain is the defining fact — mountain roads, fog and landslides after it — and the Sumela shuttle road is steep and narrow. Uzungöl in high season is a traffic jam. The city has a conservative streak and is a destination for Gulf tourism, which is mostly visible in the menus.

Private hospitals in Istanbul are genuinely excellent and a fraction of Western European prices, with English spoken in the international departments. State hospitals are free for emergencies but slow and rarely English-speaking. Insurance is strongly advised — you will be asked to pay up front at private hospitals.

Very goodBlack Sea cooking, and nothing like the rest of the country: hamsi (anchovies) fried, in rice, even in bread; muhlama, which is cornmeal and melted cheese; kuymak for breakfast; and Black Sea tea, grown on the hills you are looking at.

Around 99% Muslim by heritage, but the state is constitutionally secular and Istanbul is cosmopolitan. Women cover their heads to enter mosques, everyone removes shoes, and mosques close to visitors during the five prayer times.
