Things to do

Several days
  • Choose three estates a day, not six — tastings run long and lunch runs longer
  • Ride the Franschhoek Wine Tram to leave the car at the hotel
  • Book one long lunch at a wine-farm restaurant and plan nothing after it
  • Walk Dorp Street in Stellenbosch for the oldest houses
  • Drive over the Franschhoek Pass for the view back down the valley
  • Walk in Jonkershoek in the morning, before the heat

Every estate takes cards, and shipping cases home is routine — most estates will arrange it. Tasting fees are modest by European standards and are often waived if you buy. Keep small notes for car guards and tips.

ATMs & cards

Machines in Stellenbosch’s centre and its malls, and on Franschhoek’s main road. Use one inside a branch or a mall — Standard Bank, FNB, Absa, Nedbank — and decline anyone offering to help. You will barely need cash.

Avoid these

  • standalone machines
  • any ATM where a stranger offers to help

Use these instead

  • FNB
  • Standard Bank
  • Absa
  • Nedbank — inside a branch or a mall

Cards are taken at every estate and restaurant; a little cash covers tips and car guards.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Safety all of South Africa

Reasonably safe

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are among the calmer places in the Western Cape. The real risks are the drive and the wine: do not drive after tasting, and leave nothing visible in a car parked at an estate or a trailhead. After dark in Stellenbosch, take an Uber rather than walking back from the centre. Hike Jonkershoek in company.

What to book

Stay overnight if you want more than three estates, a proper dinner, or both towns: Stellenbosch is the base with the most to it, Franschhoek is smaller, prettier and pricier, and a night on a wine farm is the reason many people come. If all you want is two tastings and a lunch, a day trip from Cape Town with a driver does it.

How to get it: Two completely blank passport pages are required on arrival, and this is enforced — people are refused entry over it.

Health & emergencies all of South Africa

Good and affordable
Emergency number10177 for an ambulance, 10111 for police, 112 from a mobile

Required to enter

  • Yellow fever certificate, but only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present
Jabs worth having, and what happens if you need a doctor

Worth having

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus up to date
  • Malaria prophylaxis only if you are going to Kruger or the north-east — Cape Town has no malaria

Getting treated

Private hospitals (Netcare, Mediclinic) are genuinely world-class and cost far less than Europe or the US, which is why medical tourism exists here. The public system is overloaded. Insurance is worth it, and private ambulances (ER24, Netcare 911) respond faster than the state service.

Tap water is safe in Cape Town. No malaria in the Western Cape.

Orientation, not medical advice — entry rules change and what you need depends on your own history. Check with a travel clinic four to six weeks before you go.

Food tip

Outstanding

Some of the best restaurants in the country are on wine farms here, and Franschhoek has a reputation for them that it earns. Long lunches are the custom; book the well-known ones weeks ahead in summer. Try Chenin Blanc, the Cape’s own grape, and Pinotage, its own cross.

Travel tips

Nightlife

A university town with a student evening and a quieter wine-bar one; Franschhoek is dinner and bed.

Closing: Wine bars around 23:00; student bars later.

CheapR60–140 across town
Against a taxi
There is no metered taxi trade to speak of. The apps are how a visitor moves, and the minibus taxis are a different thing entirely.

Wait indoors for the car rather than on the street at night, which is what locals do.

  • Hire car — the most flexible, but only with a driver who is not tasting; the blood-alcohol limit is 0.05 and roadblocks are common
  • Franschhoek Wine Tram — hop-on hop-off tram and bus lines between Franschhoek estates, which solves the driving question for a day
  • Uber and Bolt — work in and around Stellenbosch, and between nearby estates; thinner in Franschhoek
  • Tours — a driver and guide from Stellenbosch or Cape Town for the day, the usual answer for a group
  • On foot — Stellenbosch’s centre is compact and walkable, and so is Franschhoek’s main road
  • Airport: Cape Town (CPT) is 40 min from Stellenbosch and about an hour from Franschhoek

Travel tips

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Greet with howzit and take time over it; abruptness is rude
  • Tip 10-15% at restaurants, and a few rand to car guards
  • Accept a braai invitation — it is the central social ritual
  • Ask locally which areas to avoid; the answer changes by street and by hour

Don't

  • Do not walk alone at night, or use a phone visibly in the street
  • Do not accept help at ATMs from anyone, ever
  • Do not discuss race and politics casually; the history is recent and raw
  • Do not leave anything in a parked car, or resist if you are robbed
