Mid-rangeEuro. Cards work in the restaurants and the shops, but the village bar, the beach kiosk and the parking machine still want coins, and a small trattoria may quietly prefer notes. Change nothing at the airport or the station.

Draw in the town rather than at the sight: Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit and BPER machines charge nothing beyond your own bank’s fee, while the Euronet ones in the tourist streets do. Decline the conversion every time it is offered.

Very safeComfortable and very well organised, but this is high mountain country. Weather turns fast and afternoon thunderstorms are the norm in high summer; via ferrata routes need a harness and the knowledge to use it; and the huts must be booked, because turning up at one that is full at 2,000 metres is a serious problem.

EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment. Pharmacies handle a lot of minor problems directly and are the fastest route to advice.

Food tip
Very goodNot Italian food in any recognisable sense: canederli, bread dumplings in broth; speck, smoked and air-dried; barley soup; and apple strudel at the end of it. The huts serve all of this at altitude and close early in the afternoon, so eat before three.

Why these are Italy's numbers and not Dolomites's

- Do not sit on monument steps in Rome or Florence; both cities fine it
- Do not order a coffee "to go" and expect it to be normal
