Good valueEuro, and cards are taken almost everywhere, contactless included on the buses. Cash still matters at the market stall, the small bar and the church that asks a coin for the lights. Never change money at a station booth; the rate there is the worst in the country.

Safety all of Italy
SafeComfortable, with one qualification that matters: parts of the caruggi around Via Prè and Via del Campo are a working red-light and drug area after dark, and locals avoid those specific lanes at night while using the rest of the old town freely. The main streets and the waterfront are fine throughout.

Food tip
Very goodPesto, from here, on trofie with beans and potato; focaccia eaten at breakfast, dipped in cappuccino by locals; farinata, a chickpea pancake from a wood oven; and cima, stuffed veal, in the old trattorie. The fried fish paper cones at the port are a proper lunch.
Nightlife
A port city evening rather than a tourist one: aperitivo in Piazza delle Erbe, then bars in the caruggi around it, and Boccadasse for a quieter night by the water.
