Good valueSomoni. Banks and the exchange booths in Dushanbe change dollars and euros at a fair posted rate; in the Pamirs there is nowhere to change and nowhere to withdraw. Take the whole trip’s cash from Dushanbe, in small notes.

Wherever you are: if the machine offers to charge you in your home currency, decline. That is dynamic currency conversion and the rate is set by the ATM's operator, not your bank.

Thirty days visa-free since 2023 for about fifty passports. The Pamir Highway is in GBAO, which needs its own permit whatever your visa — bought online with the e-visa, or at the OVIR office in Dushanbe or Khorog if you came in visa-free, for a few dollars and a day.

Getting treated
Thin. Dushanbe has one or two clinics a visitor would use; Khorog has a hospital that can stabilise; the Pamir Highway has nothing for days at a time. Carry what you need and insure for evacuation, which means a flight from Dushanbe.
The Pamirs are over 4,000 m for days and altitude sickness is the common emergency; acclimatise in Khorog and carry the medicine. Tap water is not drunk anywhere. The heat in Dushanbe in July is 40°C. Landslides and the road are the real risk.

Food tip
GoodHomestays feed you: bread, tea, potatoes, rice, apricots dried on the roofs, and yak in the high villages. Take snacks for the road — the distances between villages are hours. Water from the springs, filtered.

Why these are Tajikistan's numbers and not Pamir Highway's
Home broadband — Fair. Video calls and streaming for one or two people — fine for a holiday, thin for a household working. Broadband here runs at 42% of the global median of 130 Mbps.
Mobile data — Fair. Maps, calls and streaming; tethering a laptop works for an hour, not a day. Mobile runs at 35% of the global median of 109 Mbps.
Ookla publishes no separate figure for Pamir Highway, so these are medians for all of Tajikistan. Cities usually beat the national number and remote islands and national parks fall well below it — treat this as the country's shape, not as a measurement of the street you will be staying on.
A median is the middle of every connection tested there, old copper and new fibre together — so in a country part-way through laying fibre it sits well below what a fibre line actually delivers, and a rental on one can run several times this number. A form of Persian written in Cyrillic; anyone who speaks Farsi will follow it. Russian is the lingua franca in Dushanbe and on the road. In the Pamirs the villages speak their own languages and use Tajik and Russian with outsiders.
Religion
Sunni Muslim, and Ismaili in the Pamirs
The state is aggressively secular and regulates religion closely; the Pamiri people are Ismaili, follow the Aga Khan and pray in a house rather than a mosque, which is why the Pamir Highway has none. Modest dress in the cities; the Pamirs are relaxed.

- Greet with a hand on the heart and a slight bow, and shake hands with men
- Take your shoes off in a home and a Pamiri house, and sit on the raised platform where you are shown
- Accept the bread first and break it by hand
- Keep the passport on you for the checkpoints, which are polite and frequent

- Do not photograph anything official, any bridge or any checkpoint
- Do not discuss the government; the country listens
- Do not turn down the tea, which is refilled shallow on purpose
- Do not wear shorts in Dushanbe; the Pamirs are more relaxed
