SafeRelaxed and low-crime by Italian standards, and the towns are comfortable at any hour. The risks are practical rather than criminal: driving standards on the coastal roads are casual, August traffic to the beaches is severe, and the sun between noon and four in July genuinely burns.

EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment. Pharmacies handle a lot of minor problems directly and are the fastest route to advice.

Food tip
OutstandingOrecchiette with turnip tops, burrata from Andria eaten the day it is made, and raw sea urchin on the Adriatic side. The bread from Altamura keeps for a week. Puglia produces more olive oil than any other region in Italy, and the difference is obvious.
