EU/EEA and Swiss visitors are treated on the same terms as residents with an EHIC or GHIC card; UK visitors use a GHIC. Everyone else pays, and travel insurance is worth having for the repatriation cover rather than the treatment. Pharmacies handle a lot of minor problems directly and are the fastest route to advice.

Food tip
Very goodRisotto all’Amarone, made with the wine the hills behind the city are famous for, and pastissada de caval, a horse stew that is genuinely the local dish and worth knowing about before it arrives. Bigoli pasta with duck. The wine to drink with all of it is Valpolicella, and the bars pour it by the glass for a euro or two.
Nightlife
Two different evenings: the opera crowd spilling out of the Arena towards midnight, and a young bar scene in Veronetta across the river that has nothing to do with it.
